My husband and I are about to buy a house in the Rosemary Hill catchment area. We've done our research on the school but am interested in hearing from parents of children who attend. Specifically, we're interested in the busing situation. How does it work, and is it difficult on your child? All info about Rosemary Hill is appreciated. |
Check the archives, there are tons of queries. I won't repeat myself since I've both queried and posted in the past, all of the latter in positive terms (and most of the feedback I got to queries 2 years ago were also positive.) I'm not sure what you're asking about wrt busing - all MCPS kids ride buses unless they live close enough to walk. RHPS isn't extraordinary in that regard. Just wait till they start middle school - I don't want to think about the bus rides all the way through Bethesda traffic to Westland. |
I agree with PP (I'm holding out hope they decide to build a new middle school by the time we need it). I'd just also note that RH buses only have k-2 kids on them, so that's kind of bonus. |
The bus ride is relatively short. I have to admit, the bus ride is one of the highlights of the day for both my kids. It is a big part of socializing and getting to know the kids in the neighborhood (for parents too, who wait and chat at the bus stop w/ each other). |
We've been fairly pleased with RHPS (have a 2nd grader, so we're in our last year there). The bus routes vary greatly in how long the kids are on -- you can look up all the routes on the MCPS website and see which you'd be on. Getting on the bus and off at the right place was difficult for our kid for about 3 days at the start of K, and it's been smooth sailing ever since.
I would say the problems with RHPS are generic to MCPS schools -- too many kids and not enough space, not enough time for free play/recess/gym, and not enough social studies/science. I am also not delighted with the principal, who I feel is not proactive enough about supporting teachers. The upsides of RHPS are an extremely active and talented PTA with tons of parental support, great after-school options, and generally good teachers. |
our friend's kid in K goes 30 minutes each way. i personally think that is A LOT for a K student. has to be better in neighborhoods/school districts where not such a wide level of schools (RH kids place into 3 upper elementary schools. I personally would buy into westbrook, somerset or BE if possible. |
A new middle school won't be ready until the current kindergartners are in high school----if and huge if, they find the space for it. |
