college guys - flannels

Anonymous
DS is a first year college student. He’s never been interested in clothes and has no idea what’s “in” but does want to blend in - in HS he exclusively wore sweats and hoodies and tshirts (the brands were irrelevant but he wanted no obvious logos or labels) and asics sneakers.

He now goes to a small NE liberal arts college. He still dresses the same but he apparently wears khaki pants, too (he’s got pairs from j crew and abercrombie, I sent him with them in case he ever needed to dress nicely, I didn’t realize he’d start wearing them regularly). He just asked me for flannel shirts for Christmas.

My question is for a kid like this, who isn’t label focused but does want to blend, where would you shop for these? I wouldn’t describe him with any particular style, but I suppose if I had to describe him I’d say he’s slightly preppy-outdoorsy. Also, do guys this age wear plain tshirts underneath the flannel shirts?

Thanks for your help. I did ask him if he wants to shop with me when he’s home for Thanksgiving- that was a hard no

I'd start with Abercrombie, American Eagle ... these are everywhere now! Yes, a T-shirt underneath ... any color.

OP, my HS junior used to only wear sweats and hoodies and Tshirts but completely changed up his look this year.

His new go-to stores are Hollister (the teenage A&F), Abercrombie, H&M and Uniqlo.

And yes, Tshirts under the flannel shirts. These stores all have coordinating shirts.

Duluth Trading has good ones too. And their T-shirt quality is great. Also American Giant.

Thanks for these ideas, from OP.

One follow up question about sizing. The flannel shirts at Abercrombie look very oversized, almost like a shirt-jacket. Is this the style even among college students? I know they all wear them untucked but I thought trends were a little more to fitted than baggy nowadays (at least with pants, right?). DS is slight in stature, if that makes a difference in your answer.

Shaket (shirt-jacket) that can be plaid or solid color (made in wool, corduroy, faux suede) is very much in. Baggy is very much still on trend and so is layered look.
If he's tall he's probably M or L.

Yep. You could get him one like this, and one that's more fitted. Keep your receipts!

They don’t wear anything too oversized now—especially if your kid works out and has nice shoulders/arms (they tend to want to show that off).

Are flannels coming back? This warms my heart.

I think the baggy jeans are still the "in" jeans for boys though

This kid is not that.
