Dyslexia

Anonymous
My daughter was just diagnosed with mild dyslexia (stealth dyslexia) through an outside practitioner. She is in MCPS third grade.

We are in the process of setting up a meeting with our school. We have recommendations from our evaluation, which includes Orton Gillingham structured literacy intervention, extended time for timed tests, multi sensory instruction, and some others.

I’m interested in hearing from parents who have kiddos with similar learning challenges and your experience with requests from your school. What accommodations have you requested that have been especially helpful.

We have an OG tutor but of course it would be great if we could get additional support at school.

Also for those in middle and high school, have they been able to accommodate your student. I’m especially concerned as I know the amount of reading required is a lot in high school.

Read up on Maryland IEP and 504 process. Request the services suggested
)structured literacy intervention,
extended time for timed tests, multi sensory instruction,Etc.)

Go to parent teacher conference to be sure you child’s teacher is aware and discuss strategies that can be immediately put in place in class.

Approach it from a place of collaboration and willingness to help and support. But also be clear and firm on what your daughter needs.
