We're considering a trip to Mexico City over Spring Break (mid-April). Is that a good time of year to visit and how long should we stay? |
Mexico City is amazing, and in mid-April it probably will not have started raining yet and you will have lovely weather. |
Why go there? Mexico's primary attraction is that it is inexpensive. It does have some cultural attractions, but also has significant crime problems in many areas and dysfunctional/corrupt law enforcement. In other words, it's definitely a mixed bag, although you'll here from a lot of cheerleaders here.
If you can afford somewhere else, I'd go somewhere else. |
Crime--it is the main driver of Mexican illegals coming to the US. |
Have you traveled to Mexico City? |

I just lost a few thousand brain cells reading this idiotic post. Some people are so dumb and insular and racist. No wonder they think Cheesecake Factory is culture. |
Mexico City is fabulous. When we went there for spring break we did 4 nights there and then 3 in Cancun. |
Someone who has not been there ^^ |
I was thinking about going to Mexico City a couple of years ago, partly because of what I was reading on DCUM. I mentioned this to someone from Mexico - asked him about the food scene. He told me he didn't know and would never go back. The cartels run everything. His family tries to get him to visit and tell him the cartels don't bother people who mind their own business. He told them whatever, no thanks.
So, my question is why go somewhere that is totally and completely corrupt. Where if you run into any even small problem, you will probably be extorted to hand over money, because that is just how things work there and that's what people expect and are used to. I asked another person what he enjoyed most about living in the U.S. He said "the rule of law." For the most part, the rules apply to everyone. |
OP here: I'm looking for feedback from those who have visited Mexico City in the past five years. Recent, first-hand experience. Thanks much. |
Like Washington, DC? |
I’ve been Mexico City twice this year. It’s a fabulous, fascinating, beautiful and cosmopolitan city. In a lot of ways it makes even nyc where I live feel like a small town. The food scene there is incredible, both the haut cuisine and the street food. The museums and galleries are world-class and there is wonderful culture beyond the visual arts. Tons of history and diverse cultures. It’s become one of my favorite cities and I look forward to going again soon. We had discussions with numerous locals and friends who live there and the allegations of corruption are way overblown especially in that part of the country. We had zero issues with renting an apartment and staying in a hotel, hiring guides, taking Ubers and also just walking around.
The weather is great most of the year, I was there in February and August and it was perfect both times, with February being a bit warmer. |
Mexico City is amazing. We stayed in Condesa, which is beautiful. We were there for 5 days and could have stayed longer. Food was incredible. Definitely take a half day to the canals and a day to the pyramids. If I had more time I would do a side trip to San Miguel Allende. Never been but have heard it’s really charming. |
Thanks! We've never visited. How many days would you recommend for first-timers? |
