Pros? Cons?
Which schools are most comparable in terms of culture and types of kids who would be good fit? |
| No one on this board has a kid who has been admitted. |
| First true U.S. research university. It, Princeton, and MIT are the true academic powerhouses of the U.S. and have driven most of its growth. Having no law school and no undergraduate school of business just adds to its academics. |
| It is the best hospital in the country. so if you can go and study medicine there, you're off to a great start. |
| Just toured and we were really impressed. The facilities are amazing and the resources in terms of internships and job placement are unmatched versus any other school we’ve seen. |
| Overrated, immensely, as evidenced by some of the comments in this thread already. |
| My kid was really interested until she toured. The kids seemed arrogant and miserable at the same time. |
| We know people with a child there and the kid is miserable. More of a grinder school than any ivy or MIT. All they do is work. |
| How is this a question again? Wasn't this just asked last week (and probably the week before)? |

I have a second year at Hopkins who is very happy. DC is in engineering. They have a lot of great programs, not only medicine, including humanities and international studies. The campus is lovely and lots of improvements are underway. The little neighborhood in Baltimore is cute and most upperclassman live in apartments and houses there. My DC plays sports and has a ton of friends that way. The kids are nice and smart and work hard but they are not miserable. They are generous with aid.
This board hates JHU for some reason so unless the person actually has experience with the school I would caution you about listening to most of it. |

If you use Google, a whole bunch of threads on this will pop up. Drop this into the search field:
dcum hopkins site:www.dcurbanmom.com Google is much better than the search function on this website for finding old DCUM threads. Just search for DCUM and the terms you’re seeking. |
| NP here. Also looking for info about hopkins. We know it has an outstanding academic reputation, but it's hard to get a sense of the student experience- we don't know anyone personally who attended. My kid is interested in international studies, not stem. Likes the campus and location. Heard athletes are social but are they are not an athlete. Would be interested in greek. Do kids go to parties? Go out? |

Went there for grad school, thought the undergraduate experience seemed dreary, too many narrowly focused students, and disliked the weirdly cold and bureaucratic culture.
It seems like the Bloomburg money has changed it a lot, and certainly facilities and crime rate are better than they were then, and the recent grads I know are positive about it, but it would still be hard for me to send a kid there. |
| Op, you literally asked the same question a week ago. Yes, kids go out. Thirty percent or more are geeek. Nothing else has changed in the past week. |
30 percent or more are Greek. |
