Graduation Gift ideas for 17-year-old boy

Anonymous
We've received an invite for an upcoming celebration. The young man is not a relative of ours. We know his parents from a former work relationship and dh has remained friendly with them since that time. We knew their son when he was younger, but not so much now. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

I always give college-bound kids a kit of stuff they'll need when they get to school. You can put everything into a tupperware container which they can use for other stuff once they get there:

dry-erase board
small hammer, screwdriver
set of melamine plates, silverware

Money! Or gift cards.

I have to say that at least for a freshman, who will be living in a dorm and eating by way of a meal plan or pizza/chinese takeout for late nights, my own experience is that these items might not get used at all. I think cash or gift cards are best and what is most needed/appreciated.

I lived in a dorm all 4 years, and used everything on that list almost as soon as I moved in. I guess it depends where you go to school...

No less than $100? Personally, I'd think $25 was just fine.

$25, gift certificates...could even go for domino's/pizza hut. My brother got a pen/pencil set when he graduated high school, he actually got some good use out of it. Amazon.com certificate (they could use this for textbooks or for fun).

Is the graduate college bound? If so, get a t shirt or sweatshirt or hat with the name of the college. Nothing better than sporting it on the first day of class.

A roll of quarters for laundry.

Yes. To Penn, I believe.
