2nd Grade - HOPE Score

Anonymous
Hi,

We are currently preparing work samples for AAP for my 2'nd grade child. I was browsing this forum and it looks like there is some thing called HOPE score for the child. I went into ParentVue and could not see any HOPE Score. I see iReady,NNat and VALLSS , but not the HOPE Score. I am really interested in knowing my child's HOPE Score before submitting my work samples , so that i can prepare the work samples accordingly. Where can i get the HOPE score?

Thanks.

The HOPE Score is filled out by the teacher and you won't have access to this until after your kid's packet is submitted and you have to request it from the school.

Thanks. OP here. So will there be two HOPE Scores - one for 1'nd grade and another for 2'nd grade? Also, is it possible to sort of guess what the HOPE Score will be based on the report card. In both the 1'st and 2'nd grade fall report cards , my DS has consistently scored low on the 'Life,Work Skills' - specifically on the active listening skills(3 and 2) . His current 2'nd grade teacher mentioned he is talking to others during the class and disrupting it and that she is working with him. We also told the teacher that we will work with him to get this sorted and will be in touch with on progress in this area. Besides that area, he has scored mostly 3's and 4's in the report card and has decent iReady and NNAT Score.

I am concerned what will be the HOPE Score based on the bad feedback on the active listening skills. What should i do to negate this bad feedback? I am anyways planning to touchbase with teacher to see if there is any progress on it. Is there anything i can do in the parent referral form to overcome this bad feedback.

Thanks.

You cannot control the HOPE score, you cannot challenge the HOPE score, if it is bad you wont understand the HOPE score. It is compuked by a commitee including all 2nd grade teachers plus librarian and art teachers. You wont find a specific person to complain about.

I know it is hard to have something you dont have controll over, but that is life.

Good luck. Based on your qualifier terminology above "decent" scores, report card containing some 3s, but also 2s in the citizenship areas, and your description of talks, this will be a very uphill battle for you. This is not a description of a top 10-20% student. Id be prepared mentally on getting rejected and having to appeal once you know the scope of the HOPE, in order to balance that out. Also consider letting it be known you're interested in LLIV program if you're not at a center. You may need multiple years applications to get in.

Has the Teacher recommended you have your child looked at for ADHD?

What are “decent iready and NNAT” scores? Why do you think your child needs AAP? This isn’t clear in your post so it’s hard to give advice w/o that. You can’t control HOPE at all but you can submit a parent letter and samples to make your own case for why DC needs AAP.

People often don't realize it, but the school will do a HOPE score every year (at least through elementary). In 2nd for any kid who is parent referred for AAP or in-pool it will be done by the school committee (typically 2nd grade teacher, AART, sometimes 1st grade teacher) and submitted with the packet.

As far as talking during class, I recommend actually parenting your kid so he learns that's not OK. Rather than focusing on changing the teacher's opinion, change your kid's behavior. If your kid is disruptive, that's a problem outside of AAP referral. Think about the other kids trying to learn!

On your parent referral and parent questionaire you have to present a full picture of your kid that shows why he needs full-time AAP. Make sure to show specific examples in response to the questions as well as why he demonstrates HOPE traits in your paragraph.

But if the scores are merely "decent" it takes a great HOPE score to get in. And even with standout scores a bad HOPE will sink an application.

Oh and if there's one thing second grade teachers hate, it's parents trying overtly to influence the HOPE score. That's why so many of them lecture you on how they have no impact on AAP decisions (which is sort of true, they aren't the reviewers for each packet). So don't do that. Do work with the teacher on your kid's in-class behavior. Don't tie it to AAP.

My kid was exactly like you described during 1st and 2nd grade . The very reason that his teacher mentioned regarding his AAP rejection . AAP is very intense and they dont want to waste their time in working on behavior issues of the child .Also adding to it ,now the HOPE has lot do in checking on behavior of the kid .The points such as self aware ,being leader in the group all these are related to behavior.below is the HOPE that you are looking for

Dont loose your hope . Kids tend to change progressively. Keep working on and now they have changes AAP process you can refer your kid until 7th grade .

Previously it was GBRS rating which is much about the kids learning, memory ,problem solving ability etc not much related to behavior. Unfortunately now its HOPE more towards the behavior.

For some kids, yes, it is intense. Kids who are strong in LA and not math struggle with the math. Kids who are strong in math and not LA can struggle with the LA. I suspect most of the kids are fine in AAP but there are kids who struggle because they are not strong in one of the core areas.

I would argue those kids probably shouldn’t be in AAP.

I would agree. Normally the kids really strong at math but on grade level or slightly ahead in LA end up in the regular class but in Advanced Math. There is no Advanced LA so the really strong in LA kids end up in LIV even though they are more likely to struggle in math. They are the kids who are not likely to have the chance to take Algebra 1 H.

Pp here. I do hope that someday soon FCPS starts opening up opportunities for level IV LA push in, as they do for math.
