| We are applying to 4 schools for 9th grade. I’m saying “we” because we the parents have to write essays and answer questions as well as our kid, so it feels like a family effort! My question is: how long is everyone spending on all of this?! It has taken hours already, just want to gauge whether we are massively overthinking it or if this is just the process. |
| It is taking me a long time. We are applying to six schools and all of them require parent essays. Some are easier and some are repetitive but I am only roughly half way done. I think it will be a couple hours a week for the next few weeks to finish. |
We applied to one school last year and I spent 20+ hours over a four week period writing essays, requesting teachers’ and coach’s recs, and filling out forms including the financial aid application. I probably spent way more time than needed on the essays because I didn’t want to be the reason my DD didn’t get accepted. |
| Adding on time for campus tours, interviews, shadow days, athletics night, open house, going to any plays or sporting events, studying for SSAT and then taking the test. It’s a lot. We applied to three and only one had a lot of essays (the other two were sort of repetitive and basic so we could recycle). Kid landed at a school where they are happy but glad we don’t have to go through that process again. College applications are stressful but DS took the lead there so it felt less like a family project. |
| Applications… for 9th grade..? LMAO |
NP. You’re a jerk. |
| It takes so much time and effort. Our k-8 had an 8th grade capstone project and between the project and hs applications it was the equivalent of an extra class in the schedule for several months. It was exhausting. |
| We’re also applying to 6 schools and between the tours, interviews, and applications + essays, I am exhausted |
| I think the gds application takes the most work. Several more obscure essays from both parents and the student plus SSAT and extra-long interview. |
| I think I spent longer on private school applications for my kids than I did on my own college apps back in the day. |
It was several orders of magnitude more for us. |
| Anyone care to share some of the application questions? I thought it would just be something "tell us about your child" or "tell us about your child's educational experiences." We will be applying next year.... |
| Three or so years ago, a school shared a quote from MLK and asked us to write about what it meant to us as a family. |
8th grade “capstone” project? LOL. You can’t make this stuff up. Why bother when your kid will just end up in a state school? |
Alot of K-8 schools have them. They are basically independent projects/exploring areas of interest. I think it's great. And also, you are mean. |
