Kilmer's English class (AAP)

Can anyone provide some information about how much writing is expected? Will the students be expected to write reports, essays and papers? Will the teacher provide detailed feedback? My rising 7th grader does not seem to have much English assignment, be it vocabulary or writing so we have grave concerns about this so called AAP program.

We have no clues so any feedback will be much appreciated.

8th grade is better. 7th grade was a joke. Don't expect anything 7th grade in any subject except math.

There are free programs you can do after school and/or extra classes on your own if you feel your child isn't getting enough instruction. 7th grade is not a difficult year.

6th grade AAP teacher here. Your kid should be writing a lot with benchmark. Each 3 week unit includes an essay, plus a ton of short answer responses. The unit test includes another essay as well. As for vocab? The vocab instruction is more spelling instruction at this point. My kids also have a spelling test each week of benchmark. 7th grade is structured differently and kids won’t be doing benchmark next year.

Thanks. I will check with the teacher -- I don't see my DS bring back any homework that requires an essay -- at most it involves 2-3 sentence paragraph answers. Never saw any vocabulary exercise either. No teaching in roots/prefix etc.

This was the report about our middle school (not Kilmer, but an AAP center) as well. Math actually had more rigorous expectations than our center in 6th, but that was it.

We are now at private for MS. The English language instruction is so much better.

It's a religious (Protestant) school, so only of interest if you want that component to the education as well. Otherwise if you're looking for a private strong in both language arts and math, ask for recs on the private school forum. Just be prepared for the waves of people who love and hate every single school out there.

I am the 6th grade teacher. The essay wouldn’t be homework. All of the writing my kids do is in class. The essay they should be writing for Unit 3 is about a country’s government. Every 6th grader in the county should be doing this. Just ask your kid. If they say they are not, then that is a teacher problem. Roots/Prefixes will be taught in later units based off what benchmark states.
