How long can they keep you on a plane tarmac?

We've been stuck on a United plane on the tarmac in Tokyo without food or beverage service for four hours.

Actually 5 hours since boarding.

Google says 4 hours for international flights. So sorry, we also recently had a bad experience with United. I hope they let you out/update you/resume service soon!

We had this experience in Munich once. We ended up with hotel, good, and compensation though EU rules (this was a few years ago).

They usually cannot offer food and beverage service as there is generally only enough for the flight itself. We were offered water as it was a very hot day.

. They can keep you longer if there are safety or security issues.

Update. They cancelled the flight after 5 hours and kicked everyone off into the Tokyo evening. Gave us a letter telling us to find our own hotel and taxi up to $200. $200 and a cab in Tokyo? Mass confusion.

If you booked with a credit card with with trip delay coverage, check the terms, you may be able to use the card to pay for extra night of hotel, taxi, cabs, etc. Save/scan receipts. When you go back to the airport, ask them for a printed or emailed "explanation of delay" letter for the refund submission.

OP update. We made it back today.

They planned to fix our broken plane and fly all the Saturday passengers back on Sunday on an extra flight. However they couldn't fix the plane, so they cancelled the scheduled Sunday flight and gave us that plane I believe.

Now all the scheduled Sunday passengers are stuck in Tokyo.
