DCI Strategic Plan posted

Of note: Expansion/replication isn't a hard no, but there are replication readiness criteria aligned with the 5-year goals. So not soon. Expansion in certain aspects seems easier for them to greenlight.

I hope they do not expand and concentrate on the students they have.

Seems like the demand is definitely there. Some of the feeders are expanding, and there’s so much demand for the feeder schools. Of course I know demand isn’t the only issue, and even though DCI has a special charter, their mission isn’t only to serve the feeders.

Maybe DCI could open a second location and make one of them entirely Spanish and the other French and Chinese. Of course, that wouldn’t be great for students who want to learn another language.

Or another unrelated language immersion charter could open, since there’s so much demand. But that’d be tough with the feeder situation — they probably wouldn’t be able to give admissions preference to students from feeders, making it difficult to get a critical mass of students who have already been learning the languages.

DCI was created to have a middle and high school for the feeders. That was the reason they were created so yes it is to serve the feeders. They take non-feeders kids if space allows and that window is less and less.

Even though many of the feeders have expanded, DCI has enough seats for all students for next school year 2025-2026. So they don’t need to expand yet.

If they do expand, it is because they need seats for feeders, not some ideology to serve all DC kids. DCPS has a track for their students and that is MacFarland.

If DCI expands in the future, I would think it more likely be divided into middle and high school so campus for each.

Same. If there are good examples of expansions helping existing students, it would be useful to study them. For the feeders I'm familiar with, the expansions appear to have hurt (extra tough to admit since my family wouldn't have gotten a seat without expansion).
