Would you encourage your DC to be a pharmacist

Is it considered prestigious and stable? Does it pay well? I don’t know much about it but my DD is interested.

Used to be great. Now glut and underpaid.

+1. Sis is a pharmacist. Not sure it was ever great but it's definitely pretty bad now.

Why?

Horrible working conditions

Wow, I'm surprised to hear that being a pharmacist is underpaid and difficult, because the only pharmacist I know has show jumpers and rides at the AA shows. But that's just my sample of one.

Once upon a time you could be a pharmacist with a four year degree. Then they added the pharm D. In the last few years they've added a residency. If you have the old set of credentials you are way less employable and, at least with the residency, you can't really get that as an established pharmacist so you're stuck as a second tier employee.

The job market is saturated so pay is stagnant.

Lots of retail pharmacy jobs but you get treated like a retail worker. Like literally pharmacists at CVS are treated like shit, you can read about it.

Read about it? You can see it! The corporations make the caseloads way too large for any pharmacist to work thoughtfully, and they do not provide enough technicians to support each pharmacist.

I was a pharmacist tech at CVS in high school - she could try that

Can’t pharmacists work at hospitals or for pharma companies? Why would they have to be stuck with a CVS job?
Anonymous
A pharmacist friend told me many of the jobs have been made part time. She says it is like being a waitress but with counting. Terrible field now.

PP here with the sister pharm and it's much harder to get those hospital jobs which makes sense because there are way more cvs places than hospitals.

I have three friends who are pharmacists. They each hate their jobs. Two are retail, one in a hospital. Each says they'd never choose the line of work again.

It is a ton of education needed to then have to essentially work retail.
