How did your kids submit AP scores? I don't want to have to pay to withhold the bad scores so he can submit the good ones. Crazy. Can they just download the report and send themselves? Via the portal, SRAR, etc? |
You can download a score report, yes, but they may ask that you order an official report from the college board, which costs $14 or $15 per college. |
Right, but to do that you have to withhold scores you don’t want to send, and you have to pay to withhold. |
My kid listed the scores she wanted to share on the Common App. No school she’s applying to requires an official report until she’s accepted and enrolls, at which point who cares if they see the lower scores…no college is rescinding an acceptance over a 2 on some AP exam the kid didn’t even use for admission. If the college in question does require an official report just to apply, then unfortunately I think your choices are to either send none or pay to withhold. |
OMG. Seriously? I wonder how some of these people are qualified to attend college.
The score section in common app...good lord. |
This is true, for the most part. There are a few top colleges who require to see all scores, including retakes. Oxford and Cambridge in particular. They will go directly to the college board and ask if they think there's a chance something has been left out of the application and they will rescind offers or stop the progress of an application if they find this has happened. I think Georgetown may have a similar policy. |
Most colleges will use the testing section in Common App to consider AP scores.
One exception is Georgetown, which doesn't allow scores to be self-reported. So, if applying there, you need to send an official AP score report. But, that's the only college I can think of where you'd send the official AP score report at the time of application. |
Self reported on Common App and sent scores via College Board to Georgetown. |
Just submit your score through the common app, the portal or SRAR. An official score is never needed before admissions. You only send in official scores after admissions to get course credits. My kid had a couple of 2s, as well as 3s, 4s and 5s. On the common app, SRAR/Portal we only listed the 4s and 5s. The actual score report that we sent in after admissions had the 2s and 3s. |
Clarification. Most of the time, an official score report is not needed before admission. However, Georgetown is one school that will only consider AP scores sent via official score report. |
And this folks, is why there is an arms race to get into schools. Should a student who has the same GPA with all 4s and 5s look the same on the application as someone getting 2s and 3s? |
That's the wrong question. If someone doesn't report low scores, it looks like they don't have them. So someone with, say, 10 4s and 5s is going to look different from someone with 5 4s and 5s. |
Wut? The arms race is because of crap like test optional and raising people's hopes based on nonsense like ECs and essays. The AO always has the ability to ask for additional info. based on courses taken (e.g. Kid takes AP calc as a junior but didn't list scores). Why won't they do their jobs? |
