Teenage driver, car insurance

How much did your car insurance go up when you added your teenage driver (16 or 17)? Our insurance wants to raise the premium by $560 per month and I think that’s excessive. WDYT?

My insurance company told me they can't give me a quote until our son is licensed. Isn't that crazy?

Is that a typo? $560 a month? Did you add a car or he driving something high risk? I don’t remember the exact amount ours went up this summer but I think it was no more than $1500 for the year.

No, just to add her to my own car, it’s a safe SUV. My own insurance is very low, but this seems excessive. She’s never had an accident, got her a few months ago.

I think the value of one’s car factors in. Is your SUV newer/high value?

It’s the same car that I’ve had for years. The only thing that’s different is adding my DC.

Ours doubled (+$1500=$3000) when we added a teen girl. 3 years later it had gone down $500=$2500 a year because she was a good driver and over 18. Then we added a 17 year old son. That doubled the new rate= $5,000. We took that ds off a few months ago because he is in the Navy and deployed. We are now down to $3500. Somehow the removal didn't get us down to where we were before him.

If your child has good grades, sometimes that earns a discount (both of our teens have that)

Our 18 yo dd will make our insurance go up only $1600/yr. But our cars are older and aren’t that expensive

Went up $170/month for DS1 and an another $30/month for DS2 (they share a car.) The car they are "assigned" to is a nearly 20y mid size SUV. Other 2 cars in the family are 5-6 year old non luxury SUVs. Didn't go down once they turned 18y.
