HS tryouts

Any tips for my freshman who desperately wants to play for their school? They don't have extensive AAU experience which I am learning is a must these days. Girls. Mid size public. What must you show at tryouts? Name one attribute.

There is a good chance that she'll make the freshman team. If she likes it, find out where varsity players play and tryout in the spring

Or just have her try out for the freshman (or JV if no freshman team) team as a freshman, JV as a sophomore, and then if she likes it maybe think about trying out for varsity as a junior.

The “varsity or bust!” mentality in these parts is silly.

You try out and are placed on a team. There is no trying out for freshman or jv specifically

Ive never heard of a cosch giving a player a choice. You make the team you make.

She should be practicing her ball handling and shooting before tryouts. If she is on the taller side, she should focus on rebounding. Hopefully she is in good shape and can run without getting winded.

This added nothing to the conversation.

Also, on the freshman team at DD's huge NOVA public, less than half the team played AAU. She is now varsity and 2/3rds play, but it isn't absolutely necessary.

Don’t know the girls side, but my son got some good advice from his trainer at a showcase after the first scrimmage where he didn’t do much. The trainer’s advice applies equally to try outs —- focus on things you can control and make an impact there. Get the ball by getting rebounds and bringing the ball down, get shots by following in drives and cleaning up misses. Force turnovers by trapping when someone picks up their dribble, help teammates who pick their dribble and need help. Stuff like that. In scrimmages, when kids see your kid doing those things and being active, they start passing to your kid and involving them more. My kid went from basically not touching the ball in the first scrimmage to being the default ball handler by the third scrimmage.

Good luck to all!!! Basketball tryouts are by far the most difficult tryouts that exist.

Particularly when transfers show up every year taking roster spots.

Lots of new faces showed up yesterday at our DC's school tryout.

Are they good? DD said there were new faces too and was so much running, you could see who was in shape.

DS had similar comments regarding players being out of shape.
