We live overseas, but plan to move to the DMV for the 2026-2027 school year. We'd like to apply to enter AAP that school year.
Does the COGAT have to be taken at a specific time to apply? E.g., would a score from early 2025 work, or would it have to be a score from the 2025-2026 school year? Thanks, we have never been in the DMV school system before, and it is daunting. |
Are you planning on moving to Fairfax County? The DMV includes multiple school districts and they all have different programs and requirements. AAP is a Fairfax County Public School program and you'd want to check out their information. The answer will also depend on the grade your student will enter as AAP is only for 3rd-8th grade. |
Yes, we are aiming for Fairfax County, for the schools. |
Then if your student is coming in as a 3rd-8th grader the timing of the CogAt shouldn't be an issue. If they're coming in younger then that they'll take the test in Oct of their 2nd grade year, along with everyone else. .

Oh, that's great! Thank you. |
Make sure you start preparing your child for the test. Don’t let anti-preparation parents discourage you. Many parents prepare their children for these tests, even those who publicly discourage it. Don't be fooled by their words. |

"Testing Updates for 2024-25 Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) will be offered to all students in grade 2 this school year. Ability testing for students in grades 2-7 students enrolling after the main October CogAT window will occur using the CogAT in spring 2025." **** extrapolate this to 2026-2027 school year, your child "in grades 2-7 students enrolling after the main October CogAT window will occur using the CogAT in spring" 2026. |
