I'd be fascinated to know how many people actually applied - we did not because after hearing how impossible it was to get a spot we just didn't bother.

it costs you nothing to enter the lottery. you must not want it for your child at all. we want it bad so we submit applications to three schools.

What schools are we talking about here?

The reality is a bit more complicated. It is difficult to get in, but not impossible. We applied a couple of years ago for our son - two years running, we were offered space in August. We ultimately decided not to go to the Montessori program because we'd already made other arrangements for preschool. That said, we know from friends that it's an excellent program and, had we heard earlier, would've jumped at the chance for him to go.

17:41 here - you're right I didn't want it that badly (aren't you glad we didn't apply and potentially take a spot away from you?!)

I'm not really a huge fan of Montessori in general, although I'm sure it's a good program. I still might have applied though if I thought it was a good possibility to get a spot, as I'm trying to find a spot in preschool for my daughter as a 4 year old. It's stressful to apply from afar (we are moving back to the DC area this summer) and didn't want to complicate the situation.
