Common app submitted 1 min late

Anonymous
Due to a computer glitch. DC was submitting a bunch of EAs last minute. They are upset that one college that very much favors EA over RD the application was submitted 1 min late because the computer went into a spin when they hit enter at 11:58pm - by the time it finally resolved and was able to go through it was 12:01. Is it worth reaching out to someone? Who should they reach out to? Common app? School? Admissions officer who visited school?

Let's be honest- its going to look like they waited until the last minute and they did.

Reach out about what? They missed the deadline. That’s why waiting until the last minute is dangerous. It’s well known that the server gets overloaded on the last day.

It's not due to a computer glitch, it's because they procrastinated and submitted at the last possible moment.

This. I don’t tho k calling the school will help your kid’s cause, because there’s no reason they couldn’t have been doing this 24 hours or even 2 hours earlier. You shouldn’t be pushing the button on “a bunch” of applications at 11:58 pm on deadline day.

You can ask for forgiveness by calling them. Be prepared for them to say No to EA though.

What school? Submitting 1 min late will not matter at all for most colleges.

I wouldn't make a fuss about this. It will look bad for the candidate.

Deadline is for your time zone. But PST is 3 hours later, etc.

Either the university in question runs a batch job and everything from some time the next AM is in on time or they really care about punctuality - in which case, being a minute late matters.

If it makes you feel better, call the office help desk but not the specific AO. And don't give your name.

I would not even call. Either they care or they don't. Ordinarily, colleges do not go through to figure out what time zone you're in.

+1. Wait to receive the confirmation email with portal link to see how they categorized the application. You may get lucky with it being accepted as an EA app

Absolutely reach out, and please ignore people who feel the strange compulsion to weigh in with negative comments.

I would immediately have your DC send emails to each admissions office, explaining what happened (without trying to make excuses) and expressing hope that they will still be considered for EA. You can then ask your HS college counselor Monday morning for any further advice. It may work, and it may not, but you won't know unless you try.

My DC had an experience submitting an application for an academic program near the last minute, at which point the platform had crashed, undoubtedly a sign that they were not alone in their procrastination. It finally submitted about an hour after the deadline. DC immediately emailed the program coordinator, and was told that the application would be considered. And as a result of that experience, they never again will submit close to the deadline.

Good luck OP.

With very few exceptions, colleges do not even know, let alone care, that your app is late, due to the timezone issue. Wait to see what your app is designated when you get your portal, as a PP noted.

Many colleges leave their app open for a few days to catch stragglers. They do want those apps. Few colleges are super strict about the deadline time.

Michigan considers 1 min late, late. There’s a deadline and it applies to all

I really think all other colleges don’t care

But, get real, not a computer glitch

Wait for categorization. With the glitches happening all day yesterday they may give grace
