Infertility Support and Discussion
I've seen some posts over time mentioning about respective experiences with female versus male OB/GYNs. I've only been seen by female doctors to date, but I wonder if others out there have had more favorable experiences being examined/counseled by a male doctor. I can't say I've had a fantastic experience with any female doctor so far, so I'm wondering if it's time to give a chance to a well-regarded/patient/understanding male doctor. It would take some courage, probably, as I'm generally very sensitive down there and don't easily undergo any examinations. If there are recommendations on good male doctors (I'm in Mont County), please share. Thank you ...
I have seen both male and female OB/GYNs and thought I would get better care with female OBs. Wrong! After going through 2 surgeries and several IVF cycles with male REs and a gynecological surgeon who were fantastic, I am whole heartedly in the male OB camp now. I really think I have gotten better care with my male OB than the prior female I saw. Can't recommend mine, as he is not convenient to you, but hope others can chime in with ones they recommend.

I don't think you can generalize that male or female OB gyns are better or worse, the same way you wouldn't stereotype by gender for any other profession.
I've seen both, but I primarily saw a male OB for all 3 of my pregnancies, and he delivered all 3 babies, and he was fabulous. I liked him SOOO much better than his female partner; always tried to avoid seeing her for office visits if I could. I think it was their personalities, more than their genders, though. With my current pregnancy, I'm with a practice with 2 male doctors - one I love, and one I don't really know well so far - and I frequently see the female NP for checkups, and she's great too. But I'll be delivering with a male doctor once again. |
OP here ... Thanks ladies, it's good to get feedback. Of course, I agree with not generalizing quality of care based on gender. Again, any input helps to give an idea of what has worked best for others. Please do share if anyone else has input ....
I've heard Dr. Richard Footer, for example, is excellent. Do others support this, and/or have other recommendations?
Richard Footer is great! I just switched into his practice & am very happy. In general, I've been disappointed with female OB/GYN (much happier w/female midwives) as they have acted more masculine than any male practitioner I've seen. It just seems as if women have to work harder to prove themselves in a man's world so they have to play up their tough parts, where as the men can just be themselves & do their jobs.
Oh, thanks, that's good to know! It is interesting to read comments as you've made, and it goes to show that what we think might be best (i.e., fellow female doc) may not necessary prove to be the best. Of course, there are excellent women physicians too. Again, just interesting to hear of the experiences ... and any recommendations are much appreciated .... (OP)
