Why did FCPS screw up on Diwali?

Anonymous
Diwali is TODAY yet FCPS gave the kids off tomorrow. Did they really screw up or do they just not care and are using Diwali as an excuse for an end of quarter day off? Tomorrow is not Diwali, TODAY is Diwali.

Its also All Saints Day tomorrow (11/1). If you look at the calendar, it is a combined Diwali/All Saints Day holiday.

No one cares about these dumb religious holidays. Its end of quarter teacher workdays but they gave a nod to some holidays to be "inclusive"

I don’t think Diwali is a day they give off for anyway. It’s just an observation day meaning that there will be no tests or assignments due.

Also it’s the day after Halloween which makes all sorts of sense given that kids will be out late and hopped up on sugar tonight.

Don’t people fast, go to church service, etc., on All Saints’ Day? Due to the likely high absences for the observance of those religious ceremonies, there are no classes, friday night lights, other activities, etc.

Does Diwali start at sundown today?

Schools should not be off on religious holidays in the first place. If your family celebrates a religious holiday your kid should be allowed to stay home that day with an excused absence. They should not close the whole school system down so you can celebrate.

What happened to the separation of church and state in America?! If I wanted that, I would have stayed in my own country, not immigrated here.

Why do all the schools close on basically every religious holiday?!

No. Even religious Catholics don't fast on All Saints day. Not a thing.

They don't cancel classes for minor religious holidays like these. Sometimes they will throw them an O day or--like these days off--pretend they are for a holiday but really its just a convenient time for workdays.

MCPS has school Thursday and Friday! How do you feel about that?

Because we're not in India.

Do people who celebrate Diwali take the day off?

+1000000. No other country does this. You stay home if it’s important to you. Surprise, surprise-there’s time for a fall break, 2 week winter break, February ski week, and spring break while starting after FCPS and ending before FCPS.

Equality stuff

But when I was teaching honestly all these religious holidays were annoying

Like someone else said, if it’s a religious holiday and you want your kid home…call in say they are out…as a school, if I’m told it’s a religious holiday I don’t question that and marked excused the end
