Why is Lewis HS so undesirable? I think it is inevitable that Keene Mill will get pushed into the Lewis pyramid, and if that happens, Lewis will become a "better" school.
Here's a clever real estate play, if you have kids who are about to start elementary school. Buy a house zoned for Lewis. Way cheaper than WSHS housing stock, and by the time they get to high school, Lewis will be as desirable as WSHS since the feeders changed. If I'm wrong, tell me why I'm wrong. |

Choose an academic metric, they're all bad |
Because it’ll still be an under performing school unless they move at least two or three elementary schools into it. There is a tipping point that can’t occur with so many farms kids in the school unless you bring way way more students in. |
| Lewis is undesirable because it can’t offer the variety of courses and extracurricular activities that neighboring schools can. The student body is ethnically diverse, low income, and many are new to the US. The school has difficulty fielding sports teams and arts programs. |
So the problem is that Lewis High School has many poor children who aren't going to college whether for economic or personal reasons? In that case, it seems to me like all the more reason to send your kid to Lewis. Sounds like it would be easy to get straight As there, and statistically speaking, fewer kids will be applying to prestigious schools like UVa. Whereas at West Springfield, Lake Braddock, etc. your kid will be competing with all the other middle-class AAP kids with highly-involved, educated parents who know the system. |
My kids are not resources for those kids. Feel free to send your kids there though. |
We have friends whose kids graduated from Lee a few years ago and got into good colleges. They were woefully unprepared and dropped out. |
The solution is to close Lewis and dilute the FARMS population by sending the kids out to WSHS, Edison, and Hayfield. However, that would likely turn Edison and Hayfield into Lewis. |
To be clear, it is not "easier" to get As at schools like Lewis. College-bound kids would be taking all IB courses which are held to international standards. It is conceivable that a small, senior-level class of 10 kids might not have anyone earning an A with the way IB (and AP) grading works for exams. It is easier to stand out, however. |
| Why would you send your kids to a school where they don’t have any academic peers? |
Your reading comprehension is terrible. That post was actually saying the opposite of what you stated. |
Because they won't have many academic peers at Lewis. |
I’m just not interested in your opinions of how I should raise my kids. You should for sure send your kids there. They’ll have a real leg up being in that school for sure. 🙄 |
Good thing no one here is telling you how to raise your kids. Based on the intelligence level of your posts, your kids should fit in fine academically with Lewis kids. |
| My child goes to Lewis. Is in all honors classes, extracurricular sports, etc. Has a similar cohort that hangs together. They are all motivated and college bound. I tell them they can do great things at Lewis and stand out when they apply for college instead of competing with all the other high stress schools in this area. Your child will find their peeps no matter what school they go to... don't let DCUM influence you. Most have no clue about Region 6. |
