| For USC (CA), is the 2nd choice major really considered? Related to that, in the essay about major, how much space to spend talking about 2nd choice major? In this example, looking at marshall business for first choice and dornsife arts & science for second choice (different schools within usc). |
| Personally I would invest as much effort in each of them. If they are over-subscribed for 1st choice they may offer 2nd choice, but only if they're convinced of your commitment. |
Thanks. Wordcount is limited to 250 to cover academic interests, usc specifically and major (s). Kid will have to be succinct to cover both... |
| OP, my child decided to show how his academic interests (2 majors) were connected, which made the short essay not read disjointed. |

My kid is at USC Marshall. The second choice major was a combo degree but administered by Dornsife.
Wrote the essay about business interests (first major). IIRC after application, USC sent a follow up request for a second essay as the second major was in Dormsife which requires a second essay where Marshall did not - so kid had a chance to express their interest and support their submissions in the second major. Marshall is a tough admit. You only have 250 words I’d make use of the essay to express love for business. |

My kid wrote about a major in English in Dornsife with minors from Cinematic Arts. He didn’t want to go through the portfolio process for a major in CA.
But he’s interested in screenwriting and video editing so the major/minor combo works well. His essay was about the interdisciplinary connection and how each supported his career goals |
