IB and Alg I in 7th

Anonymous
Anyone done IB -
Particularly at Robinson but I guess other schools too if it works the same - and had a kid on the Alg 1 HN track in 7th? From looking at the math sequence videos Robinson has I am not sure what he does for math in 10th after he finishes Alg 2 HN in 9th. Doesn’t seem to be Trig/Precalc HN option for 10th.

What do those kids do in IB schools?

They take IB Math.

You can use this diagram as a guideline but I feel like I heard somewhere recently that they were dropping some of the AP math so I don't know how accurate this is (it's dated 2022).

Thanks to poster of this- had not seen in that format before. Question- when do kids take the “matrix algebra/IB exam review” class that is 0.5 credits if they take that? Shows on chart as after IB Math SL/HL 2– is that what kids take if finish IB SL/HL in junior year c senior year? Is that in addition to another math class? Is it during the day with a teacher or online? Thanks,

Not sure I understand the flow chart. So they take the IB math courses in 10th and 11th and then a 1.5 credit review class senior year?

10th graders take IB Math Applications or IB Math Analysis, if they intend to get the IB diploma. The senior class is a .5 credit course if they took IB Math HL or SL as a Junior. IB doesn’t allow them to take the test as a junior. That’s where the senior year refresher comes in. I imagine the kids are taking another math course at the same time as the refresher given college admissions requirements.

Hmm...this is sounding familiar to me. I vaguely remember this fact that you can't take the IB exam until you're a senior being an issue for kids who take the IB classes in their 10th and 11th grade years. I thought someone said that sometimes they took statistics BEFORE taking the IB classes to avoid that year off of IB in 12th that makes it difficult for you to retain the information for that exam. I don't remember the details. Let me see if I can find something.

Okay, I found some old document from about a year ago or so. For kids who want to wait and take the IB classes their junior/senior year, they can take pre-calc as a sophomore after taking Algebra 2 as a freshman.

Here are the sample paths they gave for kids who take Geometry as an 8th grader and Algebra 2 as a 9th grader:

Algebra 2 HN > IB Analysis > IB Analysis HL2 > MultiVar/Matrix
Algebra 2 HN > PreCalc > IB Analysis 1 > IB Analysis HL
Algebra 2 HN> IB Apps or Analysis > IB Apps or Analysis SL > AP Statistics
Algebra 2 HN> PreCalc > Engineering Math > AP Statistics

I have a Senior going for full IB at South Lakes -- the first one on the list is what he has done. MultiVar is a DE class thru George Mason - you have to 'apply' and pay for the course thru GMU if you want to get the credit.

Do they go to GMU for the class or is class at HS? Is it online? At night? Does your senior feel that is what most did that were in same position of having taken Geometry in 8th? And last one, is senior finding it comparable to other math classes or harder or easier? Thanks,

Does south lakes have a review class or is it just kid reviewing on own if done with IB math as junior?

The class is still done at South Lakes. It’s the same teacher he’s had for the last two years. The teacher is great. I think he was a literal rocket scientist in England before coming to the US and going into teaching.

Per the paths listed above, this was the option.

He has found it to be incredibly challenging. He’s never not had an A in any class at any grading point and within the first week or two of school, he asked for a tutor and may spend any where from an hour to two a week with the tutor. But. I think he’ll squeeze out an A or maybe A- this first quarter.

I don’t think that’s an option to be “done” with math if you were doing the IB diploma. I’m not even sure it’s an option to be done w math in any case?

I meant done as in took IB Math 1 and 2 in sophomore and junior years so would have to take a DE math to have a math in senior year. In that case, does South Lakes have a review class or something for the seniors taking GMU course to help them prep for the test on the IB Math 1 and 2 they took year prior? Hope I asked that more clearly but apologies if didn’t as still trying to learn right language for IB world. Thanks

We are at Marshall - we are doing the following sequence:

9: Alg 2/Trig Honors
10: IB Math Analysis and Approaches, SL 1
11: IB Math Analysis and Approaches HL 1
12: IB Math Analysis and Approaches HL 2

Some of my daughter's friends decided to take IB Math Analysis and Approaches SL 2 for 11th grade. So, they are technically out of math classes at Marshall and can look at DE with NOVA. Or, they will just to take math in their senior year.
