Has anyone ever been hired in as a reemployed federal annuitant?
I retired from my federal position because I was in a very demoralizing situation where I was being asked to do much more difficult work than the same graded employees I was working with. They just coasted. While I had to work. Horrid management. Having said this, I still see jobs in my field that look interesting. And the exact kind of work I would have enjoyed! I have read various things on reemployed annuitants Has anyone ever gone BACK into federal government after retiring who can relay their story? Do you have to start at bottom of the salary rung? Is there any chance of being given an interview if you have the skill set ( age discrimination) etc etc |

You can go back whenever, but your pay will be offset unless the agency is able to get special dispensation for you. It’s generally reserved for agencies with huge backlogs or for people with irreplaceable skills.
They need specific authority to offer this for a position, and one of the big sources of that authority (usually handled through the NDAA but removed in this year’s version of the bill) is not on track to be renewed in Congress at the end of the year. |
| Thanks. Even going back with salary offset pays more than the contract salary in my field. |
| My neighbor did this. She was an auditor or something else with the IRS. I guess she can only work 50% of the time and her appointment expires after X years or Y hours, whichever comes first. It sounds like she only gets hourly pay and does not accrue any benefits like leave or TSP match but that is what she said, she could be wrong. |
| This is correct. Your salary is offset unless you can get a waiver from OPM. To do that, the agency has to make an argument that they basically can't fill the position any other way, you have critical skills, etc. |
| I did this - hated my job. Took an early out. Got bored and found another govt job- same grade and step. Salary is off-set by retirement but make a lot more money now than when I retired because of Biden's salary increases. Still contribute to TSP. If private sector is not available or pays less - go back to government. There is no downside. Like I never left and when I do leave, my annuity will be recalculated because I have stayed for more than 5 years. |

Did you go back in with the same vacation hours per pay period you had when you retired initially? Or did you have to start back at square 1. Thanks. |
