Recommend a good extra carseat/booster for this age

Anonymous
We have recently joined a new school and with sports and other activities, it would be nice to carpool. But I have an only child and only one carseat. Is there a good seat or booster I can just keep in my car for carpool? I do often pick things up for work so do uninstall and reinstall the one carseat often so I can fold down the back row. So something easy to install would be great. Most of the kids are turning 8 this school year.

I think there was a big recall and further news that this one isn’t safe.

get an inexpensive backless booster. The Bubblebum is great but I don't think it works for those situations as well as just a normal booster.

Any Graco backless booster.

We like the Diono Solana Backless. Easy to use or throw in the trunk when not in use.

I have an only child and keep one of those $15-20 Grace/Cosco/whatever boosters from Target in my trunk for carpooling. Some kids bring a Bubblebum or Hiccapop, which works well in the middle seat. I agree the inflatable ones aren't as good, but for a big kid who remembers to use the belt guide hooks, it gets three across in boosters and is better than the alternative, which would be no booster in the middle seat (which many 7-9 year olds try to insist on).

This. Inexpensive and actually not that large.

Thanks everyone! You probably saved me an hour of research and waffling.

I posted at the same time as you, OP. Good choice!

Cosco rise. $20 tops, light weight, and easy to use. Perfect for my 8 year old.

I get hand me downs from neighbors to keep around for this type of thing. People are always trying to give them away. I don't clip them in, just toss them on the seat when needed. We are mostly doing short rides around town though.

By age 8, they are using the seat belt, so the integrity of the straps etc is way less important than with a full blown 5 pt harness.

The clips on the booster are just to keep it in place when a kid is not in it. So if you never drive around with the booster empty, you don't even need them. Or you can buckle the booster in without the kid.

Otherwise in a crash your booster becomes a pretty heavy projectile.
