When, if ever, is it acceptable to unfriend/unfollow people?

Is it considered rude after 5+ years of not talking to each other or seeing each other, or just fine?

Anytime you want. Who cares about social media anymore? Only people over 60 are on it.

Newer to instagram only to showcase very specific art projects. My only followers are fellow creators and I switched to a private setting. Early on, my profile was open to everyone and it soon filled with weirdos and random acquaintances. A creepy DM changed my mind.

Are you really asking this? When is it ever acceptable? When and if? Seriously some of you just leave me scratching my head.

This is the embodiment of where we are in 2024 in America.
Newsflash—you don’t need permission to do anything you want to do, as long as you are not physically harming another person.

Never!! How rude *gasp*. You have to follow them until you die. Were you raised in a barn?

I unfriendly most of my extended family last week, including my mother. Their posts were becoming more and more vile. I don't need to see that.

I had an extended family member who kept saying really offensive things so I unfriended him. FWIW, this wasn't political polarization or anything. It was just casually mean and offensive. The next time I saw him in real life he went crazy on me yelling etc., explaining that I should have muted him instead of unfriending him. I was surprised he had even noticed. I had actually forgotten by that point. People are nuts, but his response was very validating for me. I unfollow people constantly now.

It is so weird that some people seem to think that would the invention of social media it's now "impolite" to have normal boundaries.

I can like someone and not want to get updates about their kitchen reno. It's fine.

How did he know you unfriended him? It’s not like you get notified when someone does. Dude has issues.

My son’s live-in GF of eight yrs recently found out he cheated on her and broke up w/him.

We were very close but for conflict of interest reasons I told her that I would completely understand if she unfriended/unfollowed me on social media which she did.
