We are looking into a catholic school K-8, which we think will be a great fit! We recently learned that starting in 1st grade, recess is once a day. Is that typical of your school? Can you share your school and recess amount so we can bring it up if we go to this school? We will have tangible examples of other schools? Maybe this is typical, but I don't know since I don't have any comparisons. They have PE twice weekly, but I don't know if I should count that as recess.
Thank you! |
| Non-catholic private. In lower school recess is 2x per day. 30 min in morning and 20 in afternoon. |
| Non-Catholic k-8, recess didn’t switch to only once per day until 5th grade. PE also 3x/week at that point. |
| Haha. What they are doing works for their school if they have others enrolled. You want to come in and demand that they change the recess amount because of other schools? Then just choose a different school. |
| Catholic K8 and recess 2x lasted until at least 2nd grade. |
| Catholic K-8. Recess twice a day through 3rd gr. |
| Our school is recess once a day, but the teachers in the younger grades make an effort to take the kids out more often whenever possible. |
|
Catholic K-8 and officially recess is 1x per day starting in K but the K-2 teachers tend to take their kids out by themselves for another one when they’re able to.
Recommend asking current families how open the school is to suggestions and how often they tend to change something about how the school is run. |
| Our Savior Lutheran in Arlington- recess 3x per day K-2, 2x 3-5, not sure about 6-8 but i know they do get recess |
| Don't bring it up unless you want to be labeled a problem family. It's so arrogant to tell the how to run. |
| Christ Episcopal School has PE and recess every day |
| Our non-Catholic K-8 has recess 2x a day in elementary and middle. It might be different for under Grade 2, as that's a separate division and our kids didn't attend in those grades. In middle school it's one 15 minute recess in the morning and a 20 minute recess after lunch. |

In public, they don't let the children outside many days because of weather, too wet, snow on playground, etc. Then the students are stuck in their classrooms. In private, students are either outside or in a gym for recess, almost never in the classroom.
The schools that wear the full body rain suits will go outside the most, next the ones that ask you to leave a raincoat and boots at school year round, and so on. |
| Private Christian K-12 and in the lower school it's once a day for 30 minutes, as you describe. However as 23:34 mentioned it's a lot more likely for them to be outside than when they were in public (when recess was 2x per day for 10 and 20 minutes, which felt ridiculously short). |

Washington Episcopal's MS has 40 minutes of recess every day; 20 minutes after 2 classes, then 20 minutes after an additional 3 classes. This number doesn't include the 1-hour sports practice 4 days a week.
Too many numbers in this reply, my apologies. |
