Handling packaged raw meat

I’ve always handled the packages of raw chicken and beef as if they were the actual product. I don’t believe the outside is washed after being sealed, and it is very possible for leaking or other gross contamination in transit.

When I have groceries bagged, I put them in plastic wrap like you have from the produce section — Trader Joe’s has a roller by the meat for this purpose.

But how likely is it to potentially be contaminated? I remember as a kid we just put meat packages wherever, and they are tossed on the same conveyor belt as everything else.
