Early voting: Can I chose any location in Virginia?

I am going to be about an hour away for most of the day, but I thought I would slip away to vote at the nearest location to my MIL. I assume i can vote anywhere?

No. Only in your election precinct. It’s on your voter registration card.

What if your voting location isn't doing early voting? Can you do another location nearby that is considered a different precinct, but same county?

Just googled it for my state-Virginia and when I put in my address it gives my voting site in my precinct and a list of early voting sites outside my precinct.

Why are you asking a question on the intricacies of Virginia election rules here?

For early voting, If you live in Fairfax County, you can go to any of the early opening poll stations in Fairfax County. Voting is by County and City. On Election Day, you can only go to your precinct.

In Virginia, for early, in-person voting, you can go to any location opened/designated by your jurisdiction (usually your city or county). On Election Day itself, most places I’m familiar with require you to vote in-person at your specific precinct, which the PP correctly states is on your voter registration card.

For example, here are the times and locations for Fairfax County.

Why? Because most localities require paper ballots, including all of Virginia, and having all the possible iterations at every possible location just isn’t in the works at the moment. Printing a ballot on-demand could solve that but allowing that introduces a whole other set of security issues and Registrars already have enough to deal with.

The thread title seems to suggest you want to vote early but your OP speaks of being away for “the day.” If you’re going to be away at your MIL on Election Day, you should vote early at a location designated by your local government (usually their headquarters or a library).

Didn’t you get a sample ballot in the mail that explained all the voting rules?

+100
Concerned at this question in general, these are the people coming out to vote this election, they can't even read their voter card which explains all this. Same thing on reddit lots of basic questions that they should know prior to voting in an election. Highly worrisome.

NP. I got confirmation of my voter registration status, but no sample ballot. But all of this info is available online.

Talk about excuses to avoid MIL, hah.

Anywhere in Fairfax county, they look up your address and print the correct ballot for you. I do it every year.
