What would you bring to this gathering?

Anonymous
New work friend is having a small casual late evening gathering to celebrate her husband's birthday.

I know wine is an obvious choice, but I don't drink and while I give people wine sometimes it can get awkward.

Is there something from Trader Joe's I could bring? I won't be able to get home between the store and home, so something that doesn't need heating would be good.

Or should I go with flowers?

Get some chocolates from Trader Joes. They have several that look "fancy" but are yummy and easy.

The other thing I love from there, that are amazingly good, are the little mousse bites. I most recently saw them as pumpkins, which might feel childish, but are absolutely delicious.

But always get flowers at TJs because they have the best ones. So get those too.

I always do wine. If people don’t drink they will regift it and bring it to someone else’s home.

Whereas no one is going to regift food if they don’t eat what you bring and flowers are work for the host and also just die so fast.

No flowers unless you bring them all ready to display, arranged in a vase.

I'm not worried that they don't drink. I mean they might not, but they can regift.

But I don't drink, and in my experience when you bring wine to someone's house they often open it and pour you a drink and then there are awkward conversations when you refuse it. It's just weirdness that isn't a big deal but I'd rather avoid.

I'm happy to give a bottle of wine to someone who knows me well enough that they already know I don't drink.

If you can locate St. Agrestis's "Phony Negroni" anywhere, consider that. They are an excellent non-alcoholic choice, and the packaging is really nice.

Agree with fancy chocolates from Trader Joe's .This is a NEW friend, it's not even for them but their husband, and you're coming straight from work. Fancy chocolates are a great choice!

Fruit and cheese tray or flowers. I feel like alcohol, cigarettes or drugs or even desserts aren't healthy gifts.

For dyi, keep a couple of inexpensive glass vases and a scissor keep in your car so whenever you are picking flowers from grocery store on your way to a party, you can make them presentable.
