We rarely have a free week day when the kids don't have some sort of activity, tutoring, therapy, etc. So when we have a random day off the kids come home from school and do their homework and then they literally veg out and watch tv and do nothing. Sometimes they will come for a walk with me and the dog. Kids are elementary aged.
Go out and shoot hoops in the driveway. Ride bikes on our street. Throw a football or baseball around with each other in the yard. Read books. Whine. Eat dinner. Repeat.
Seems normal and fine if its only 1x per week. My son is similar and likes to play computer games on the one day he is home. But we also use that day for random (usually fun) errands, maybe eating out, or doing a project, like he got a big lego set he wants to work on, or he is building something in the woods. We also prioritize earlier bed time on that night and encourage a full "take all the time you need" shower routine since ir can be rushed on other nights. He is 9 but will sometimes still ask to take a bubble bath. He occasionally invites a friend over or sees who is out in the neighborhood. Basically like the leisure stuff we dont have a chance to do other nights.
Go outside and run around it play a game. If weather not good, they play a game inside or build legos together. Or make something like muffins.
We go to one of the nearby parks. Or they play in their bedrooms or playroom. Or they read, or we bake, etc.
Mine's almost 8. He plays beyblades, builds legos, plays sports, reads. Now that he is into chapter books and easy comics like Dogman, he can read for hours.
If other kids are around play outside, if not, read, draw, write or play with Legos. Right now our 8 year old is in a phase of making little books and setting up a play store to sell them to us. Stuff like that.
Independent play.
|
Crafts, read, play together. But we limit activities to 3 days a week max and try to do activities for both kids on the same day to maximize free time. We are also done and home eating dinner by 7 at the latest.
|
I leave them to entertain themselves and they get up to a wide range of things, many mentioned above, including whining. When they say 'I'm boooored' I say 'bored people are boring' and encourage them to be more creative.
My kids are off every afternoon/evening except one (swimming lessons on Wednesday). They play in the backyard, read, one loves coloring, play a board game.
Watch youtube
Play in yard or in room, read, bake, arts/crafts.
My kids played in the backyard together. The older one got ready for their sports practice while the younger one played Legos by himself. Then we all dropped the older one to the sports practice. Younger one did get to watch some TV after that, before bedtime. I don't let them turn it on too early in the evening because they won't want to stop watching after that.
On nice days they will play outside. We have a big enclosed back yard but they often just play on the driveway, biking, chalking, normal kid stuff. When the weather is bad they will play in the basement where we have a lot of space and loads of fun things to do.
