Signs up in Missouri Avenue/SD Ave corridor for Friendship PCS

Anonymous
Is Friendship planning to open a new school in this area and/or take over one of the low enrollment charters? There are yard signs all up and down Missouri and South Dakota. Maybe Social Justice school? Both Hopes are gone now right?

They already have a school in that area, Friendship Ideal. I see it didn't match a lot of students in the lottery so maybe they're try to recruit more.

Opening a new school takes a lot of process with the PCSB, I don't see any sign of that. But you're right that there are some troubled schools in that area.

They have enrollment signs up right now near another one of their campuses too. I am not sure why that is.

Probably it's to increase enrollment. They are allowed to enroll kids mid-year. I know it's after count day, but taking the long view rather than a one-year budget view, it may still be beneficial to fill seats.

For now. Honestly I would not be surprised to see it fold or be closed-- it's up for review this year.

Capital Village is on a financial corrective action plan as well.

There are a lot of Friendship yard signs in the greater area but they appear to just be promoting enrollment. Friendship Ideal is nearby (Kansas and n Capitol) so most of the sides are just “I (Heart) Friendship Ideal” with a web address, and some are the same thing but for their online school.

Other than the ones on their actual campuses or in people's yards, those Friendship signs are just as illegal as the "no cost solar" and "will buy your house/car for cash" signs.

The Charter Board doesn't seem to be actively closing any schools. Schools will get into trouble and fold but unlikely that it will be because of the Charter Board. Even when there are known, longstanding financial and legal problems, the Charter Board isn't actively moving to major consequences for schools. I don't know what's happening at Hope Tolson but I found it really surprising when my neighbors were considering it that the school is reporting at the board and to parents that 75% of their 8th graders are proficient when it is actually 0.

Well, sometimes they fold because they know they're about to be closed. They did intervene with the Hope schools a while back and forced a change of management organization, I believe. They also forced Harmony's management organization to put in $1 million, not that it seems to have done much good.

This year's lineup of reviews and renewals includes an unusually large number of struggling schools. Hope Tolson has been struggling as long as I can remember. Capital Village is on a financial CAP and up for 5-year review. Social Justice is not doing great, neither is Girls Global, neither is Bethune, neither is I Dream. IDEA has a terrible Summative Score and terrible CAPE scores. I woudn't be surprised if the PCSB passes them along with no real oversight, but I also woudn't be surprised if they come out of it with conditions, a near-term review, or other changes.
