why won't DCPS allow my 9th grader to repeat the intro language class taken in 8th grade?

Anonymous
Hoping someone here has successfully dealt with this.
My 9th grader is in a Language 2 class in DCPS -- but the class DC took in 8th grade, while technically the Language 1 class, was at a private school and DC didn't really excel. I would like DC to be able to redo the first year to develop a better base. The school says no. Any suggestions? Are there options?

What’s their reason for saying no? It’ll be too easy for your daughter?

Sounds like you should just supplement outside of school. Unless your kid failed last year, the pace is pretty slow and she’s going to get bored pretty quickly.

Haha that’s what the school said. Not a huge confidence builder for the program.

Official reason was it’s not allowed to repeat a class taken in 8th grade.

My kid took the same language class in 8th and 9th, passed both times, and they’re both on the transcript. All DCPS.

NP and that reason is BS. Kids can absolutely repeat a class- even just to try to earn a higher grade on the transcript. The school is making that up.

Students in DCPS are not allowed to earn credit twice for the same course. If student failed the course they would be allowed to repeat. The internal auditors look for this and change students' schedules when it is identified.

Principals seem to have the discretion to override this.

This makes sense if it's the same class at the same school or even both in same-level DCPS schools, but seems crazy if we're comparing a HS DCPS class and a non-HS non-DCPS class. Two intro foreign language classes could be miles different in terms of coverage, depth, curriculum, etc. That's really nuts.

Here's a follow up: Does your DC need to rely on the credit s/he earned in that private foreign language class for any reason? Because, if not, then it seems totally crazy for DCPS to count it against them.

DCPS also does the opposite by the way. Kids at Walls routinely have to re-take classes that they already took at other non-DCPS schools, even though it’s the same material.

DCPS sucks.

My kiddo didn't even take Spanish in 8th grade. She tested too high in 9th grade Spanish 1 and they moved her based on prior exposure to the language in 7th at a non-DCPS private.

She wasn't happy about the change at all, but she's currently acing Spanish 3 in 10th. The school made the right call in my book.

But they can retake the class to earn a higher grade. So yes this kid can retake the class.

They probably don’t have room in the class for your kid. They figure your kid can sink or swim in level 2.
