If you hate fur, please spare me your comments.
I inherited a fur jacket and a long mink coat from my mother in law. They are gorgeous but don’t fit me. I would love to have them made into something else — maybe a stole or fur-trimmed wrap, blanket, something useful. I can’t throw them in the trash and don’t want to donate them. Anyone have recommendations of what to have made or a place where they’ve done this? |
| I think you just take it to a fur coat store and ask them. Don’t stress, fur is kind of a weird hill to die on. Enjoy it. |

My dog would hate that! I have a gorgeous short jacket from the 60s that might be fox that looks so good on me, but sadly I have never once found a place to wear it. I had sort of thought maybe an inauguration ball for Biden but with the pandemic that only inauguration ball we attended was in our family room. I don’t actually think people are as against fur as they were 30 years ago. At this point everyone understands that producing new items has a much greater negative environmental impact than wearing something vintage. Those north face parkas don’t just drop down from the heavens with no environmental impact. And there are so many vintage furs in circulation that I think the assumption at this point is that you are probably wearing vintage—no one is out clubbing baby seals for their jacket. OP, I think you just need to decide what you want and then go to a furrier and see what’s possible. |

I know someone who had an old mink coat disassembled and used to line another coat. No mink visible from the outside, but all the warmth.
It's bulky, though. Maybe pillows or throw blankets is the way to go. |

Tote for winter
Pillow for couch Upholster a stool Vest Use sleeves for arm, calf or neck warmers |

The "fur coat store," lol. Any "fur coat store" .. assuming they still exist ... is in the business of selling fur coats. Not helping OP figure out how to make pillows or a dog bed or whatever out of something old. |
| I had my moms made into teddy bears for the grand and great grandchildren. |
| I've had one made one into a liner for another jacket. It's very luxe. |
Best idea. Family heirloom kinda stuff. |

We had a family member turn fur coats into teddy bears for the grandkids. They are expensive but the kids have loved them

Thanks all. Nice ideas here. I would love to have a nice fur edged wrap or stole, and maybe a teddy with the leftovers. The coat is huge so hopefully there would be enough. My MIL died a number of years ago and part of the reason I haven’t made a move yet is due to the cost it would take to convert it.

Miller's Furs will do restyling if you want to turn it into a a jacket/lining, etc., but I have heard it is pricey:
https://millersfurs.com/pages/storage-cleaning-repairs-restyle-appraisals I've been looking at some people on Etsy that make pillows/throws: https://www.etsy.com/shop/NoseToTailSewing and there are folks who do the teddy bears on etsy as well: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1449485958/custom-fur-coat-teddy-bear-small-size-12 |
| Miller's Furs will do this. I had them give me a quote to remake an old fur coat into a hat and jacket and it was around $3K - so brace for sticker shock. It may be less if the items are much simpler. |
