HS and ASD

I am curious to know how much do parents help their ASD kids with essay assignments at home. This is for students who are good/great in Math/Science but average in language arts and their writing skills may be below grade level.

My kid is not in high school yet, but I read a book where as long as you are working with your child and providing scaffolding that you should help them with assignments they need help with. Each subsequent essay you provide a bit less help.

Eventually got a tutor especially for the long essays. The smaller assignments they did at home often with a lot of help as well.

In retrospect I wish I hadn't helped so much. It damaged the relationship and gave an inflated sense of where they were in writing, but I also don't think that anyone is willing to help teach this in the way someone with disability needs. Lots of repetition, writing camps, etc. and they will be competent enough for college but likely not skilled.

In team taught they give them graphic organizers. That with tutor.

I outsourced the help because she and I don't work well together, but I absolutely made sure help was available. Her disability legitimately makes writing assignments very difficult -- she's not going to learn faster by being left to fail.

Same here but would emphasize my kid particularly needs help understanding the assignment.

Same as PPs above. Tutor, graphic organizer, parent help when child is willing to tolerate it. It’s always been this way, and HS is even harder with bigger expectations and less help, even with IEP. It’s hard to see college in the cards given where child is now with writing and ability to self-start and manage on these assignments (not to mention the essays to apply to college), but you never know.

Same. It is not getting better. I worry all the time about how my kid is going to do in college without my help.

Piggybacking on this post. What HS courses should an ASD kid who is weak in writing skills and needs help with coming up with ideas NOT take? I am thinking probably AP Lang and AP Lit. Thoughts?
