| I have begun following ODU in social media because one of my daughter’s robotics mentors went there and has mentioned it to my daughter as a place to consider for engineering. I do not know how to put this but, almost all the pics on their FB page (move-in day! Homecoming! Etc) show mostly African-American students. Is this mostly considered an AA school? (My daughter’s mentor was not.). Are we the last family on Earth to figure this out? |

Why not just check the common data set if this has you so very concerned.

ODU is 29% AA 47% white.
I looked through the recent social media photos and they portray a diverse school but not predominantly AA. Perhaps you are just not as accustomed to a diverse population? |
| No it is not . As an alumni I felt it was pretty diverse. |
| ODU is very diverse, reflecting the demographics of Hampton Roads, from which most of its students come. They also have a large population of first gen students. But no, it is not “considered” an AA school. |
| I just googled it and looks diverse but not predominantly AA. Even it was, so what. |
|
The public historically AA university in Norfolk is Norfolk State University.
By contrast, ODU originally was the Norfolk campus of W&M, but has been independent for a long time now. |
| It’s just more diverse than most VA schools. |
You should be ratioed for this post. It's really f@cked up. |
| I think it makes sense that african americqn students in many cases would choose ODU over nearby Norfolk State. An understandable preference for some. |
GMU is the most diverse |
I'm going to go out on a limb and say regardless of the answer please spare the AA students who are there from you and your child. |
| This has got to be a troll post. |
29% is triple or quadruple North Arlington or northern/western Fairfax publics. Only southern Fairfax publics like Hayfield would approach those numbers. So for the average DCUM poster who lives a sheltered existence 29% will stand out. |
|
29% AA is fairly high for most non HBCU public colleges.
We really liked ODU for the more diverse student body than most. The department my daughter was considering seemed even more heavily AA, which was not an issue for us at all. |
