Southern Living had a great one in the 80s or 90s. See if it's online. Called Caramel Cak
No grains of sugar on sides of pan you make frosting in or it gets grainy |

omg my old southern grandmother used to make this for me as a kid! I loved it. It's too sweet for me now.
Her recipe: 1 stick butter, 1 cup brown sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cook 2 minutes. Add 1/4 cup milk. Cook, stirring until it boils. Add 2 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. |
| Is there a question? |
Caramel cake is always the answer. As long as we keep 'caramel' three syllables. All you "carmel" people go straight to jail. |
So you beat it or just mix in the powdered sugar? This sounds good and I might try it with the cooks illustrated yellow cake. My kids wouldn’t like it but I think I would love it with a layer of crushed peanuts like a snickers cake. |
