Southern Living had a great one in the 80s or 90s. See if it's online. Called Caramel Cak
No grains of sugar on sides of pan you make frosting in or it gets grainy

omg my old southern grandmother used to make this for me as a kid! I loved it. It's too sweet for me now.
Her recipe:
1 stick butter, 1 cup brown sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cook 2 minutes. Add 1/4 cup milk. Cook, stirring until it boils. Add 2 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.

Caramel cake is always the answer.

As long as we keep 'caramel' three syllables. All you "carmel" people go straight to jail.

So you beat it or just mix in the powdered sugar? This sounds good and I might try it with the cooks illustrated yellow cake. My kids wouldn’t like it but I think I would love it with a layer of crushed peanuts like a snickers cake.
