My 4th grader had been showing growth on both math and reading MAP scores until this fall. Their math fall 2024 MAP score is actually lower than their fall 2023 and spring 2024 tests. They dropped from 94th percentile to 79th.
What would explain this drop? Kid is in compacted math so I’m making sure that isn’t a problem. They have an IEP for small group and extended testing time. Honestly, last year I thought the scores were so bloated I worried a staff member was cheating! |
| They changed the scoring this year. Lots of kids dropping: https://ecragroup.com/2024/05/02/nwea-map-growth-assessment-changes-for-the-2024-2025-school-year/ |
| Thank you PP! Why didn’t MCPS take the option to delay this change? Feels like all of our previous scores are now useless. The link has no information about why they changed the scoring. Grade level specific means nothing to me |
| 94th percentile to 79th percentile is a big drop. I can't imagine that the change in scoring would result in a difference that large. My kids did not get a decline like that. |

The percentile tells your where your kid is relative to everyone in the grade. So if all student scores drop the same amount the percentile would be the same.
Maybe your kid just had a bad day. |
| It sounds like your kid may be having some challenges in understanding some 4th grade concepts, which can happen. I would see what they are covering in class and see what it is they might not be understanding. |
| Seems like the map test for all grade levels is the same test. The only difference is what topic or grade level you start the test at. |
The percentile scores reported are against the national norms from 2020, built on select samples from testing in the couple of years before that. Only the MCPS locally normed percentiles, which are not reported but used for certain magnet program lottery selection, utilize current peers as comparators. So if all student scores drop the same amount, the percentile reported would change for all of them. |
11 pt drop, one time only? Could just a bad day. Focus on doing well on homework and quizzes, and see what happens in Jan winter score. Did your kid hit down their 4 subscores? |
|
Where does winter score last year fit in?
If your kid's knowledge is a mix of class stuff and some extra bonus stuff, score could be erratic based on what parts they know and what questions get asked. |
