Thought experiment

As a spinoff of the post on surrogacy being outlawed in Italy and related moral debates, I’m curious which of the following dcumers would support being legal. Feel free to add in other potential categories and/or reasoning in your response

-prostitution
-Selling sperm
-selling blood/plasma
-Surrogacy (ie carrying someone else’s genetic child for money)
-paid adoption (Ie surrendering rights to one’s own genetic offspring in exchange for money)
-selling a kidney, portion of the liver , etc
-selling a vital organ (ie sacrificing one’s life) with the money going to one’s designated heirs

Everything should be "legal" by default as laws only restrict freedom.

Freedom is scary to many people.

I thought prostitution was already legal in Nevada. Selling your own child or a vital organ should be illegal. I'm not up on whether the others are legal or not. Seems like maybe they should be freely donated because you don't want people robbing people of their sperm, blood, organs, or children to make money. There needs to be some sort of ethics committee to answer these.

Only in a couple counties.

There's a book called The Red Market I think you would find interesting

They should all be illegal.

Most of these are not legal because they become too corruptible.

Selling sperm and eggs is a whole different ball game since easy access to DNA genealogy tests. Your genetic off spring will find you.

I'd be inclined to allow all of those. But I haven't studied the negative ramifications of allowing the sale of organs or of adoptions that involve the exchange of money.

The only thing I thought should be legal is selling a kidney but you are right, someone could force another person to do this under duress.

I want to live in a world where no one needs to do those things

-prostitution
Should be illegal but I don’t support harsh punishments for the prostitutes. Often they don’t have other options. They need, like, prostitute rehab. And this is often multi-faceted - they need child care, lessons on money and budgeting, counseling to escape abusive men, probably additional benefits like a stable place to live. Drug and alcohol rehab too. A lot of prostitutes are trafficked and forced to live in hotels and stuff. People aren’t doing this just because they really love having s*x with random guys. Punish the people buying sex and the pimps to the full extent of the law though.

-Selling sperm
Illegal, donating is ok though

-selling blood/plasma
Same as above but ok to donate

-Surrogacy (ie carrying someone else’s genetic child for money)
I’m ok with it if everything is tightly regulated. The one thing I’m not sure of is what if the parents change their minds while the surrogate is still pregnant. Can you force them to accept the baby and what happens then?

-paid adoption (Ie surrendering rights to one’s own genetic offspring in exchange for money)
I kind of thought this was already happening? Not exactly, but the adoptive parents usually give the birth mom money for living expenses and medical expenses. I don’t see a big problem as long as it’s regulated and the adoptive parents realize the birth mom can back out at any time.

-selling a kidney, portion of the liver , etc
No, should be donation only to level the playing field.

-selling a vital organ (ie sacrificing one’s life) with the money going to one’s designated heirs
No, this reminds me too much of prostitution somehow.
