AAP homework expectations in 4th grade?

Anonymous
Hi there! We're moving to the Churchill / Cooper / Langley pyramid. Wonder what the homework expectations are-- is there a general push away from homework or is it still going stong? DD currently has ~45 mins of homework / night in 3rd grade where we are (NOT FCPS). Thanks for any intel!

1) Is she already accepted into AAP? If not, you have to go through that process first.

2) Might get more specific answers on the dedicated AAP forum, though these days that is largely flooded with posters who want to spew meaningless arguments about TJ.

45 minutes per night in 3rd grade is so ridiculously innappriopriate! You can expect 20 minutes of independent reading and a little bit of math practice weekly. My son's non-reading homework took him 20 minutes a week.

OP - not yet accepted to AAP, but she's currently in the equivalent where we are so have been advised that she should be able to be considered over the summer when our move is final and admitted to AAP?? All new to me so appreciate any and all advice and intel!

I know... it's super frustrating. And much of it is silly online stuff that could easily be omitted... one of the many reasons we're leaving. This sounds SO much better and will leave her time for extracurriculars and just *downtime* that she doesn't currently have!! THANK You

We're at a different center and my 3rd grader has 20 min of reading a day and a double -sided homework sheet to do over the course of the week (1/2 math, 1/4 LA, 1/4 science or social studies). It takes maybe 10- 20 minutes total depending on her mood and how much writing is involved that week.

My AAP 4th graders has about 20 min of math per night. She is also supposed to read at least 20 min and write a short summary each day of her reading.

No it isn’t. Ten minutes per grade level is very appropriate. I doubt public schools will ever go back to homework because they believe it’s inequitable.

10 minutes per grade level is the MAX, so 30 minutes/night in 3rd grade should be the max. 45 is ridiculous, unless 30 of that is just reading for pleasure.

My non aap fourth grader has about 30 minutes of homework per night. It’s the perfect amount.
