Does MCPS resist or cultivate semester or year abroad language programs for high school students?

DS is starting high school this year and really likes the language he has been learning for several years. He wants to do a semester or year study program in this country. Does anyone know how MCPS supports students that want to do this? When I was in high school we had a foreign exchange students at our school every year. It was a great to have to them. I really don't know about American students doing this in other countries. Any advice?

I have friends who are hosting foreign students here and that seems to go well, but in terms of a local kid going overseas... I imagine a MCPS student would receive no credit at all for the year missed, given the state graduation requirements and general rigidity of MCPS about what constitutes meeting those requirements. If my child does an exchange--and DC has wanted to since elementary school -- I would be fully prepared for her to have to take the GED/ homeschool the rest of high school/ take classes at Montgomery College to complete high school. Which frankly wouldn't be such a bad thing. Check "The New Global Student" by Maya Frost. But contact the local AFS. Rep and see what their experience has been.

Know someone who spent a semester abroad last year. I'm not sure how the MCPS coursework was handled, just know the student won a scholarship to go and had a wonderful experience.
