we were considering the name Anna if our baby is a girl but my husband saw the letters Ann typed out and made a comment that it's the same name...
I always thought of Anna/Ann(e) as different names (from same origin), like Julie and Julia or Jenna and Jen/Jennifer. He kept asking for a male equivalent like that and I can't think of one. If we choose Anna how likely is it that people will nickname to Anne? We both like the nickname Annie but I'm not a huge fan of Anne... |
| Anne is boring. Anna is lovely. |
|
I personally love Annie!
Of course, there is a chance she would be nn "Ann" but it is already a short name, so less likely, imo. I like Anna, too. Classic but not overused. |
|
All the people who go by Anne I know are named Anne, or something like Anne-Marie. I don't know any one named Anna who goes by Anne.
Anna is lovely. I think Anne is too. |
|
My daughter is Anne nn Annie. Anne and Anna are not the same name, but they can take the same nicknames.
If he needs a boy example of names that are very similar or contain many of the same letters but are not the same - Jude and Judah, Mike and Micah, Leo and Leon, etc. |
|
I believe they are forms of the same name. Both are beautiful names. We have lots of women named Anna and Anne in my family, going back to a 4x great grandmother named Susannah. Hannah is another version of the same name.
Whichever you choose, you can’t go wrong with these names. They’re all lovely. |

I love Anna, and if you do choose Anne, I prefer an E.
The only way to keep it from getting shortened is to politely, but consistently correct people. Once corrected, people generally try to get the name correct. - Christina, who is not Chris, Christine, Kristy, etc. |
Thank you! |
| I don't understand your husband's reasoning. They are literally not the same name. |
Thank you sincerely for the validation-- i felt like I was going crazy. |
| Anna is not a long name -- people aren't going to shorten it to Ann. My DD's name is long (9 letters) and it gets shortened to a lot of things), but you should be just fine. |
+1 Plus nicknames are usually diminutives. So you might get Annie, but not Ann(e) |
Yes, Anne is much nicer with an e. Much more elegant, as Anne Shirley would say. |
|
They are not the same name.
Anne is pronounced like Ann: an Anna is prounced an-uh. Annie is a nickname for Ann/Anne but I had an Irish great-grandmother whose given name was Annie. I've never met an Anna who used the Annie nickname. Anne/Anna/Annie arw family names for me. I love Anne. Classic but not common anymore. |
| My daughter is Anna, and no one has ever shortened it to Ann. |
