College Sports Recruiting - CaptainU, NCSA, Others?

Anonymous
Hi, We are very green to the college sports recruiting world... our child competes at the national level and is a sophomore. We are being contacted by colleges and recruiting services.

Any suggestions on which one to go with, or do you use them all? I think it's a little early to be doing this but maybe this is how it is now. Any suggestions welcome!

lol? You do realize what schools have competitive rowing, right? Rowing is a great way in to top schools.

I so wish I could put the “rowing lol” folks in a boat. I teach people to row and I love the moment they come to me wide eyed going “why is this so hard? I had no idea!” I did warn them, but it looks so effortless when you do it well.

You don’t need a service, but it can be helpful if you tend to get anxious or hover too much, because they can do some of the hand holding. But if you are organized and can help your kid with the emails then a service isn’t necessary. You might joint one of the Facebook groups or read a book about the recruitment process so you have a picture of how it will all work.

+1. I'd love to see them in a boat because we both know it would tip right over.

I have a high school junior pursuing recruitment options in another sport.

Generally, NCAA Division I (and maybe Division II) schools cannot make contact with a potential recruit until June 15th at the end of the sophomore year. I don't think Division III schools have that "limitation."

We're still trying to convince our athlete that she may not be "all-world" caliber, so we are getting her to focus on potential majors (which she has done) and then start looking at schools with that major and are somewhat competitive in her sport. Also start compiling lists of reach, target, and safety schools that match the major-and-sport combination. Your athlete can start reaching out to the coaching staff at those schools, even though the staff may not be able to respond due to NCAA requirements.

We did sign on for a limited engagement with a sport-specific recruiting service ($1K-ish) ... and NOT NCSA. It's still early ... and we're now in a quiet period until February or so, the fun will only ramp up again in the late winter/spring.

We paid for a couple of recruiting services - the basic NCSA so we could easily look at schools, coach names and contact into, skills and academic match without a lot of time on our side. That is all public info, so it was just convenience. We also paid for a sport-specific recruiting service, and that may or may not have been necessary or helpful.

In the end kid’s club coach called a college coach he has a relationship with, said “you want this kid” and then told my kid “go visit and I bet you get an offer. Kid went, loved school, got an offer, and committed.

So much angst and gnashing of teeth, and in the end it was a coach’s phone call that did it.

Those places are scams trying to make money off UMC parents

If your kid has talent, no need

Another sports parent here. Posts like yours are so cringe to me. Any true athlete isn’t just competing as an admission hinge.

If they’re doing rowing you think they’re doing it because they love it? GTFOH
