Recommendations for Converting MiniDV tapes to digital files -- who to use, who to avoid?

Anonymous
I have almost 40 Mini-DV tapes that I would like to have converted into digital files that I can store on an external drive and in the cloud. Legacybox has a great deal right now, but they get terrible reviews on Reddit and elsewhere. Has anyone successfully used a mail away service that they liked and would use again? Do you have any recommendations for local places that do this (I feel a little mor comfortable with a local service)? I know Dodge Chrome offers this video conversion -- has anyone used them for it? If you have suggestions for who to use and who to stay away from, please post!

Check out Forever Studios in South FL, I know someone who used them.

MiniDV is already digital, which means you can use your laptop, a camcorder, and a software program to store them on your computer. It's time consuming but that's what I'm doing since I don't feel comfortable handing my family's videos to somebody I don't know.

How rare or valuable are these?

For material that is exceedingly rare or for broadcast, try DC Video in DC, Colorlab in Maryland, or Guy Spiller in Richmond. You would get actual engineers who understand video doing the work, and the results would be top quality. Any of these places would be able to deal well with problematic tapes (recorded on uncalibrated equipment and/or stored improperly).

For mundane stuff, Kodak Digitizing would be the default option with reasonable pricing. You sort of get what you pay for with any of these options.

Just buy a converter and cables required. DIY.
