| My daughter started playing basketball a year ago. She’s probably average for her age and experience and it will never be more than recreational. She can choose travel or recreational. Does it really matter which one she does in terms of development if she’s also doing drills and skills classes? She would be in the lowest level travel team. Also she is currently 5’6” tall and hasn’t gone through puberty yet. Is that a good height for 12 year old teams? |
| Height shouldn't matter for recreational basketball-and that's true through HS. You will want to seek the best experience in terms of coaching and playing time. We went after travel because rec was too casual, coach dependent |
| Travel will be better for development but I'm confused you generally don't get choose travel or rwc. You try out for travel and of your kid is good enough, you make the team. 5'6" is probably good for a guard in travel. She'd be short for forward or center. |
In our area they have more than one travel team per grade. We’re in the Northeast. Three girl travel teams in her 7th grade. Plus the best ones are playing middle school basketball so there is plenty of room. We should try travel for her, I guess she’s ready. Thanks |
Our rec is super casual, they have teen girls coaching. |
It isn't the worst idea to play both with travel taking precedence over rec if there is a conflict. She's at the age that playing time is important. Also, she can build confidence playing giant rec players and take that into travel. |
She is missing experience in playing time. In camps they just do 3on3 I think they call it. That’s a good idea to see what the differences are between the two. |
