Two days near Tokyo

Any ideas? I don't want to do the Golden Trail route. I'm looking for something closer to Tokyo with some interesting walks and sights.

Take the Shinkansen to Osaka, Kyoto or Nara and stay overnight one night? It’s like the same distance and dc to nyc.

Done that already. I want to try something different than these cities. I'm thinking more of mini break places.

Use time out Tokyo to find something, you’re better off with more local sources than dcum

Find a nice hotel out by Fuji five lakes? Izu peninsula if you want to get off the beaten track? Koyasan or Dewasanzen for a temple stay? Up near Sendai (or anywhere a shinkansen line can take you quickly)?

It was wonderful. We saw some beautiful places, stayed in some gorgeous inns.

This was like 15 years ago so I've forgotten a lot - but I think we only did three days instead of five. Really enjoyed it!

It’s become insanely popular thanks to social media. Booking places more difficult than before. Kiso valley still nice, though.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that - it was practically empty when we did it, but that was before social media even existed (beyond, like, myspace).

Hakone loop. Lots to see and then relax in hot springs.

Thanks. I really want to try something away from the crowds, using the Greater Tokyo pass not the JR Pass. I've visited those big name cities before.

I guess I'm seeking the equivalent of St Michaels MD or Chincoteague VA rather than New York or Chicago.

I'll look into the suggestions for Hakone and Izu peninsula. Thanks for those.
