Spelling in MCPS ES?

Anonymous
Hi,

Does your child receive spelling instruction in a MCPS elementary school? If so, at what grade did it start and at what grade did it stop?

Thank you.

For my 3rd grader it started this year due to the new curriculum (CKLA). I heard of other kids getting it in the younger grades prior to the new curriculum but I think it was teacher dependent.

The new curriculum definitely calls for it in 3rd grade but I don't know about other grades.

Just started in 3rd grade

My kids knew the spelling of simple sight words before kindergarten. I was teaching them spellings at home.

US education for K-12 is pretty bad. I am surprised parents accept that.

Kids no longer in ES, but yes received specific Spelling instruction in 2nd. Reading Specialist pulled out the advance students to make it easier. Word Study was done 3-5 on both general ELA and ELC. Not really sure how or why other schools/teachers have not been doing word study.

That said I did phonics and reading from preschool through 1st at home. Bananagrams are friends.

My kid is now in ninth grade and didn’t have spelling after second grade. His spelling is abysmal when he doesn’t have spellcheck.
