Had to stop nursing abruptly - how long until I 'dry up'?

Anonymous
Because of my daughter's allergies, I had to stop nursing all of a sudden and put her on formula. I have an abundant supply (was nursing and pumping to build up my supply before going back to work) so now my boobs KILL. I've been using some ice packs and stretching out the pumping. Does anyone have other suggestions? How long will it take for them to 'dry up'?

Just a few days until the engorgement goes away, but you'll be able to squeeze out a little milk for a long time afterwards. Months.

It took me 2-3 weeks till the pain went away. I'm sorry! Motrin!

This link lists taking ibuprofen, sudafed, using cabbage leaves compresses and expressing a little milk to relieve the pressure.

Eatign sage or making a tea out of it can help dry you up. Worst it will do is nothing.

Try not to consume too many liquids in the next few days. I mean don't get dehydrated but don't drink too much either. Go to the grocery store and get a head of cabbage. Peel the leaves off and crumble them up a little in your hand, then stick them in your bra and leave them there over night. In the next two days you'll feel MUCH better. Try not to pump at all if you can stand it.
