Hi - new private school parent here. I'm noticing that, compared to our preschool (which was like a daycare really), there are a lot of school closures for different reasons, a day here or there, etc. What do folks do with little kids? Do you take the day off from work? trying to figure out how best to juggle this, as I'm not used to having so many closures.
DH and I take turns working at home
I work from home and my kids play on their own and watch tv. There are places like Red Panda that used to offer 1 day camps… not sure they still do that.
If you have a Pump It Up near you they have one-day camps over random school breaks/teacher trainings. Sometimes the after care staff will want to babysit as they have the day off as well and want to get paid.
Camps or WFH. We also saw that a lot of parents would plan birthday parties for days off. It helped for part of the day, at least!
I don’t have the kind of job where you can work from home so I have to find childcare arrangements (family, friend, center, etc)
The nanny handles them - aquarium, zoo, park, etc.
How long do you intend to keep the nanny? Do you have younger kids? |
Our DD is in K and we have found lots of options for days off school camps. Depending what your kid is into, there are opportunities to coordinate with vendors (I.e. kids art studio) to offer one day classes for a group of kids too. Also, you can find other families that are in the same situation and coordinate with them to alternate care on off days.
Least helpful response. Glad you got a chance to humblebrag about having a nanny. |
Well OP did post this in the private school forum even though it's applicable to all ES kids. |
There are options. JCC has day off camps, as do most of those martial arts camps. I work from home on a flex schedule so I'll work extra hours before or after.
I take the way off and knock out chores. The kid helps me, so it's like montessori style but for real. We bake a pizza, sweep and mop the floor, garden, etc.
Camps. If you're in NW, we do Red Panda or Active Play. Active Play generally tracks the public school schedule but Red Panda has a lot of the private school day off camps.
Our nanny usually covers half the day, and one of us (usually me) covers WFH in the morning. If a camp is available, I sign up my youngest and my oldest, who typically have homework to catch up on our wants to go the gym and work out. We will likey have a nanny until our youngest can drive, given work and travel schedules.
