Am I the only one still so sad about the death of Gavin Creel? He was just so talented and, based on all the obits and tributes, such an amazing human. I was lucky enough to see him multiple times in musicals (he was the wolf/prince in Into the Woods for people who saw the recent production on Broadway or at the Kennedy Center). He was also in Eloise at Christmas time.
He is also pretty much exactly my age and died of a rare cancer two months after being diagnosed. I know people get killed in car accidents, die from heart attacks, get diagnosed with ALS or pancreatic cancer - but still dying two months after a cancer diagnoses is just so fast. I keep watching this video of him performing at a fundraiser with other Broadway stars (https://x.com/SWEENEYSTVEIT/status/1842590609644847526) and looking at how full of life he was back in April. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/30/theater/gavin-creel-dead.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWFApJpFfsE https://www.instagram.com/lin_manuel/p/DAjM3SBJpFY/?hl=en&img_index=1 https://www.toledoblade.com/a-e/music-theater-dance/2017/07/23/Tony-winner-Gavin-Creel-goes-from-Findlay-to-Broadway/stories/20170722169 |
| I am sad with you. He was absolutely wonderful. |
| Our family is sad too. So grateful we got to see him at the Kennedy Center in "Into the woods" |
| Loved him! Also very sad. |
| Very sad here as well! He had a beautiful singing voice and was a marvelous actor. |
| I'm sad too. He was the best thing about the Hello, Dolly! revival |
| I'm very sad, too, OP. He was great as Cinderella's Prince in Into the Woods. Based on my Instagram feed at least, he was very beloved in the theatre community. |
| Another sad theater goer. A tremendous loss. |
|
I am totally with you, OP! Beyond heartbroken.
I am glad I got to see him once, in Into the Woods on Broadway. All of the tributes from his friends on Instagram are so, so, so moving. Just reel after reel of his talent and his kindness. It's infuriating that he was snatched away from his family, his friends, and the musical theatre community. May he rest in peace. |
| So sad! |

In response to the public outcry, the Committee of Theater Owners has changed their decision. They will dim all the marquees for Gavin after all, and not just one theater from each group.

OP here - I am glad I am not the only one. It is kind of funny being this sad about someone few of my coworkers have even heard of!
If you want to go down a youtube rabbit hole, the videos from past Gavin Creel Miscast performances are pretty amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jmji2iu4Ajo https://youtu.be/uF8AtY28lNk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43gvHOOrFSo |
